Real estate agents often get a bad reputation, but, as in any profession, there are both excellent and less effective agents.

Here’s what to look for in a great agent:

  • Experience: Focus on the number of completed transactions, not just years in business.

  • Personality: Choose someone you feel comfortable spending time with, as you’ll interact frequently.  Buyers can spend hours for weeks with their agent looking at houses.  Sellers are interacting regularly, setting the sales price and discussing offers.

  • Accessibility and Communication: A good agent responds quickly and provides timely answers, which is crucial during the buying or selling process.  Emotions can run high, and timing can be incredibly important.  You want to know that your agent is there for you whenever you need them.  Also, agents will be working with the inspectors, attorneys, and lenders involved in the transaction.  Agents need to be responsive to all parties.

  • Professionalism: Agents who collaborate well with others help ensure a smoother transaction. Avoid those who speak poorly of other agents.

Bottom Line: Trust your intuition and use resources like Google Reviews to help choose the right agent.
